WFMW Backwards Day: What is in your family binder?

I've been contemplating putting together a family binder/notebook for a long time now but haven't known where to start.

I'm thinking of something that I can keep in our safe or filing cabinet that includes important numbers of the financial and social security and telephone nature as well as important documents and well, information.

Really I just need something that Reed can grab if I die and it tells him what to do. Because well, while we talk about things often, if push came to shove he wouldn't know where to find anything. And while I'm already not planning on dying until I have another wife lined up, and that won't be any time soon, I do want to be prepared for the unexpected.

So, the grand and glorious question of the day is what is in your family binder and can you point me to some online resourses to guide me along this process...without spending money on it...?

Thanks I'd totally appreciate any help! And after you leave a comment with that help you should head over here to Rocks in My Dryer for more Backwards Works For Me Wednesday and see who else you can share what works for you with!

I have used Mrs. Catherine's info for a binder as well - it's how ours is set up.

Our family binder has copies of all insurance (life as well as health, car, and homeowners - all updated yearly at renewal time), emergency phone numbers, medical histories and medications for all family members, bank account numbers and locations, IRA information, copies of SS cards and birth certificates for everyone, phone numbers of relatives to contact in case something happens to one of us and a ton of other things. But these are what I would deem the most important for us. :) Hope this helps and thanks for visiting me and offering up your opinion!

Go to www.flylady.net and on the side panel click Control Journal and she will help you build the most precious gift you'll ever have..you'll have EVERYTHING at your finger tips in page protectors that you can write on w/a dry eraser and it also will include amazing cleaning schedules - I don't know what I'd do w/out mine.

A girl I worked with also periodically (every 6 mos or so) photocopied everything in her wallet, front and back, in case she ever lost it. That way she knew exactly what would be missing. Then she'd file it under "taxes" or something else that a theif wouldn't be so likely to grab.

Not really along the binder lines, but I thought it was a good idea.

Lots of free printables. The binder you're referring to used to be called an "alien abduction notebook" there... as in, if an alien abducted you, that book would help your loved ones with all your important stuff. ;)

My notebooks combine Flylady, Organized Home, and some other things of my own. I've got a household one, with emergency contacts and general stuff, but truthfully it isn't updated or used often. I actually have several binders now- one for each kid, one for my personal stuff (swaps, etc), etc.

I like the idea of a binder like this. Very, very good idea! I'm glad I popped over to see you. Thanks for visiting my blog! :)

The binder is a great idea, but as the wife of a security specialist, make very, very sure that you put it someplace very, very secure. Someone could do a lot of damage with all that info.

I've been working on building a binder, but so far all I have is my emergency numbers and a folder full of take-out menus. So thanks for this post, and to the commenters for the direction!

Thanks for stopping by my blog with your laundry tip!
